October 2014 Meeting Reminder

ReminderWoodturners, Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 7 2014 beginning at 6 PM at the Lyndon House Art Center, 293 Hoyt St, Athens. Our demonstrator for the month is Mark Sillay.  He is an accomplished woodturner from nearby Dekalb county who has demonstrated for us in the past.  His demo for the month will be offset turning with emphasis on tools, techniques and turning.  He plans on turning Christmas ornaments among other things. You can check out his work at his website www.marksillay.com.  You can meet him beginning at4:45 at the Melting Point for dinner and walk over to the Lyndon House following.  If you don’t meet Mark for dinner come on to the Lyndon House at 5:30 to help set up for his demonstration.

A few reminders are in order:

  1. Election of 2015 club officers is coming.  We still need someone for president and vice president.
  2. We need demonstrators for the North Georgia Folk Festival at Sandy Creek Park on October 11.
  3. Continue to make Christmas ornaments for our club sale on October 25 at the Lickskillet Artist Market.  Proceeds go to The Food Bank of North East Georgia.  You can also sell your own turned items at this event as long as you agree to work at the club table.
  4. We need help at the Lyndon House Harvest Festival on October 23 9:30 AM till 1 PM teaching youth about the crafts, tools and techniques of yesteryear.
  5. The club Christmas party is set for Monday, December 15 at the same place as last year.  We had a great time, plenty of food, and free beer and wine.  Also, an ornament exchange was fun for some but not all.

September 2014 Meeting Reminder

PlannerFellow Woodturners, Our next meeting of the Classic City Woodturners is Tuesday, September 2, 2014 beginning at 6 PM at the Lyndon House Art Center, 293 Hoyt Street, Athens, GA. We have a special treat this month for our demonstrator – it is our own Jim Talley. He plans a two fold demo. First, will be a demonstration of the turning of Christmas Ornaments from the simple to the more difficult. This will get you in the mood to begin turning your own Christmas Ornaments in preparation for the club Christmas Party on Monday, December 15, 2014. Also, the club is planning a project to raise funds for the Food Bank of North East Georgia by selling your turned and donated Christmas Ornaments during the Lickskillet Artists Market at the Lyndon House Art Center on October 25,2014. Second, everyone is asked to bring a turned item that didn’t turn out as anticipated. He will discuss some possible ways to correct or enhance these “mistakes” to save the piece. He will also discuss any specific tools you may be having trouble with or questions about. So, bring your questions, problem turnings, wood and tools. Jim will be at the Melting Point at 4:45 for dinner if you would like to converse with him. We also need help beginning at 5:30 PM to help set-up for the meeting.

We mention again that Club Officer nominations for 2015 are being sought, specifically President and Vice President. Club Officer positions and duties are listed in the Club By Laws at http://www.classiccitywoodturners.com/about-ccw/bylaws/. Also, at the web page current and upcoming events are posted. Bookmark this page and refer to it for up to date information at any time.

Another event of interest is the Lyndon House Art Center Harvest Festival on October 23, 2014. This event is an annual celebration of old time crafts and rural life and gives participants a way to learn about some of Georgia’s history first hand. The demonstrations run from 9:30 AM until 1 PM. Club President Lou Kudon is seeking help from club members that would be interested in demonstrating the old time and pioneering tools. Contact Lou at lkudon@gmail.com.

Hope to see you there!

Fellow Woodturners, The next meeting of the Classic City Woodturners is Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at the Lyndon House Art Center, 293 Hoyt St, Athens from 6:00 to 9:00 PM.

Our demonstrator for the month is Don Russell who will demonstrate turning in the polychromatic style.  You ask? what is that.  It is the art of cutting staves of different grains, colors and textures from wood and assembling them into blanks to be turned into a bowl.  These processes, when learned can then be used to make lamps, wine bottle stoppers, pens and many other projects.  He will cover design, determining the angles, cutting, gluing, turning and  finishing.  It will also include tool choice, tool use, sharpening as well as other processes.  The class is for beginners to advanced turners.

If you would like to meet Don, he will be at dinner at the Melting Point beginning at 4:45 PM.  You can park at the Lyndon House and walk to the Melting Point.  If you can’t make that come on to the Lyndon House at 5:30 PM to help in set up of equipment for the demonstration.  There will not be sandwich fixings at the Lyndon House this month.

Orders for club polo shirts with the stitched club logo will be taken.  They are $25 each.  Also, nominations for 2015 club officers are being sought.  If you would be interested in serving please let one of the current officers know.  Elected officer positions and duties are stated in the club bylaws  web page http://www.classiccitywoodturners.com/about-ccw/bylaws/ .

There are a couple of upcoming opportunities to demonstrate, display and sell your turned items. They are the North Georgia Folk Festival on October 11 at Sandy Creek Park, Oconee Fall Festival on October 18 in downtown Watkinsville and the Lick Skillet Art Show at the Lyndon House on October 25.  If you would like to participate in any of these opportunities speak with club President Lou Kudon.  Also, if you do you will be required to work at the club table for a period of time manning the sales, demonstration or promoting the club.

We look forward to seeing you there on August 5!
